Did you know……?

When comes to facts or random facts I have a small nack for them, well more of a history nut. Did you know out of 3,000 Thru-Hike attempts only 20% successfully make it to the end? Out of the 20% that finish only 25% of that is woman.

It takes 5,000,000 steps. Yup, you read that right, that is 5 million steps to get you from Springer Mountain, GA to Mt. Katahdin, ME. Plus extra steps to get water, to go a shelter that is off the trail little bit or even doing town chores.

Did you know with all the elevation gains and losses of approximately 464,500 feet is the equivalent to hiking Mount Everest 16 times? With the highest elevation is Mount Clingsmans Dome at 6,658 feet in the Smokie Mountains. With right behind it is Mt Buckley 6,603 feet, as well in the Smokies.

Out of the three trails (AT, PCT, CDT) that make up the triple crown, AT is the hardest out of all three trails. The PCT and CDT are more graded for horseback foot traffic, where as the AT you go up and over with steep climbs and bouldering at points of the trail.

The AT expands Fourteen States: NOBO as follows 1. Georgia 2. North Carolina 3. Tennessee 4. Virginia 5. West Virginia 6. Maryland 7. Pennsylvania or Rockslyvania(I’ll explain in little bit) 8. New Jersey 9. New York 10. Connecticut 11. Massachusetts 12. Vermont 13. New Hampshire 14. Maine. Going SOBO you start with Maine and end in Georgia.

In 2021 it is 2193.1 Miles long

Pennsylvania or Rockslyvania, as the thru- hikers call it, because it is rock mind field and is known where footwear goes to die.

Did you know that Virginia holds 1/4th of the trail alone on the trail? It holds 556.6 miles of the trail with West Virginia with the smallest miles on the Trail with 2.7 miles.

Did you know that there is 165,000 white blazes? There are a white stripe that is 2″ by 6″. You can stand at one and be able to see the next blaze 70 feet ahead.

White Blaze

There are approx. 262 shelters along the AT. In the south they are about 8-10 miles apart, where as in the north they are little more spread out.

The AT runs through 8 national forests and 6 national parks.
